Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club in association with UNCL, Yacht Club de Dinard, Société Nautique de la Baie de St. Malo, and the Royal Yacht Squadron, this annual 170 nautical mile cross-channel RORC race is a classic in the Royal Ocean Racing Club calendar. If you haven’t tried overnight racing in a competitive fleet before, this is a great race to cut your teeth on.
Make it a fantastic long weekend away by combining the race to St Malo and then cruising home via Sark or Alderney to wait out a foul tide and to experience something completely different. The fleet departs from Cowes on the Friday morning and wind and yacht dependent will arrive sometime in the afternoon or Saturday evening into St Malo. Once the lair of Corsairs hiding from the British Fleet, locking into the basin below the massive fortified walls is a great way to finish the race. Dinner ashore and a run into some of the more well known bars inside the walls makes for a fabulous evening out but beware: hangovers have been known to occur on the Sunday morning!
Departing St Malo Sunday morning and heading north with a fair tide is a must, and at some stage during the day you will lose the fair tide and be faced either with a run ashore or 6 hours of slow sailing. Selecting either Sark or Alderney for this will be sure not to disappoint – these Islands have a unique appeal and if you haven’t visited them, be prepared for a nice surprise. Arrival back in England on Monday after an overnight sail rounds off the weekend nicely.
